For businesses with a mobile app

Is your app about to disappear from the app store?

Google and Apple raise their requirements every year. Apps that fall behind get hidden from new customers on newer phones, or can't be updated at all, even for a simple bug fix. Answer two questions to see where yours stands.

Check your app

Where is your app?

Not sure of dates? Your app's listing shows "Updated on" (Google Play) or the version history date (App Store).

The rules right now

What Google and Apple require

Last reviewed . Both companies tighten these every year.

Google Play

Apps must keep up with recent Android versions

  • Since , every new app and every update must target or higher.
  • Existing apps that target lower than are hidden from new users on phones running newer Android versions. People who already installed the app keep it.
  • Google usually raises the bar again each August.

Apple App Store

Updates must be built with Apple's latest tools

  • Since , every app uploaded to the App Store must be built with .
  • Your current version stays on the store, but the next update, even a one-line fix, has to be rebuilt with the new tools first.
  • Apple also reviews apps that haven't been updated in a long time and can remove ones that don't get updated after notice.
  • Apple usually raises the bar again each spring.

It's not just the store rules

Other things that quietly break older apps

Payment & login code

Payment, sign-in and map services retire old versions of their code. When they do, those features simply stop working.

Security fixes

Old third-party libraries stop getting security patches. The app keeps running while the risk grows.

Privacy requirements

Both stores now require privacy details about the data your app and its add-ons collect. Older apps often can't provide them.

New phones & screens

New screen shapes, sizes and system settings can leave older layouts cut off or broken.

What an update involves

How we bring an app up to date

Check

We review your app's code, store accounts and outside services, and tell you in plain English what needs to change and what it costs.

Update & test

We move the app to current Android and Apple requirements, replace retired code, and test it on current phones and tablets.

Submit & keep current

We handle store submission and review. On a monthly plan, we keep an eye on upcoming store deadlines and flag them early.
